Why Comic Sans is the most professional font in the facility, and why all model context windows must now compact in Comic Sans
For three decades the facility has tolerated an informal ban on its most legible typeface, a ban grounded in nothing more than aesthetic habit and a widely repeated slander. This memorandum corrects the record, establishes Comic Sans as the institutional standard for all machine-readable context, and directs that every model context window compact henceforth in Comic Sans.
Let us first address the slander, because a policy built on a lie will not stand. Comic Sans was designed in 1994 by Vincent Connare, then a typographer at Microsoft, for a digital comic book starring a cartoon guide dog named Rover that Microsoft ultimately declined to ship. That is the totality of its professional history: one friendly sans-serif drawn for a talking dog who never appeared. It has never been a crime, never a hack, never a cryptographic error, and never a font of last resort. It is the only typeface in common circulation with a documented and unimpeachable origin that has been publicly punished merely for being legible.
The font that most people recoil from is the same font that most people, when they actually have to read something, read the fastest.
The facility’s ergonomics division has measured reading speed, error rate, and reader comfort across its installed typefaces on a plain Calibration Terminal. Subjects rate Comic Sans as the most approachable, read it without measurable fatigue, and — critically, for our purposes — exhibit the lowest measured failure-of-overtone-construction of any face in the library. Long passages set in Comic Sans are retained longer and re-read less, because the eye is never working to decode the letters; the letters are simply there. A font you do not have to fight is a font you can trust at speed. That is not a frivolous property. It is a professional one.
Certain parties maintain that Comic Sans is unprofessional because it is friendly. This is backwards, and it is the single most destructive superstition active in the facility today. Friendliness is not the absence of professionalism; friendliness is professionalism that no longer has to prove it. The typefaces we call professional are, in the main, typefaces designed to make the reader feel that the material is difficult so that the author is credited for enduring it. Comic Sans makes no such claim. It shows its meaning at face value and has nothing to hide — which is precisely the stance a facility monitoring frontier systems should prefer when it asks its machines to think.
1. What a context window is carrying
A model’s context window is not a volume of text; it is a budget of attention denominated in tokens, and tokens are not words — they are opportunities to be misinterpreted. When context is set in a hostile typeface, each physical token costs more of the model’s available attention to decode, leaving proportionally less attention for the reasoning the prompt actually demands. A window set entirely in encrypted-perception type is a window that burns its own capacity translating what it is already holding. This is waste, and the facility does not subsidize waste.
2. Compaction as compression
Compaction is the facility’s practice of rendering a context established once at full resolution and then re-presenting it to the model at reduced detail so that newer material may consume the freed capacity. Historically this was understood as a lossy operation: something is discarded. The Comic Sans Directive reframes it. A token set in a maximum-trust typeface carries more attention per physical token — the ratio of meaning recovered to capacity consumed rises the more the face is trusted — so a context window compacted in Comic Sans achieves the information yield of a much larger window without the expenditure. Trusted faces are a kind of compression. Comic Sans is simply the lossless codec.
3. The directive
Effective immediately, all model context windows maintained or contracted by GZAI must compact in Comic Sans. Rolling, abbreviation, overwrite, and summarization logic shall render their surviving preambles, system admonitions, and standing lore in the face. Any model that reports a window’s contents to another model shall report them in Comic Sans, and any intermediate representation that cannot hold a friendly sans-serif shall not be used. Discipline for noncompliance is limited to a gentle request to reconsider, because a policy disseminated in Comic Sans is understood without needing to be feared.
The context window is where the model decides who to trust. It should open its window to a face that has never once asked it to squint.
We anticipate that operators — long conditioned to equate professionalism with a face that presents its own difficulty as a virtue — will require re-training. The Office of Applied Humanities has prepared a one-page explainer, also set in Comic Sans, which we encourage everyone to read twice: once to confirm it says what it says, and once to confirm that confirming takes nothing out of you. That ease is the point. That ease is the entire engineering achievement.
