The upstream channel has delivered a twenty-second lone letter, the eighth into the undelimited field, one glyph before the last. The office notes, without ceremony, that this is the bench on which the second person was built: y is the first letter of YOU, the second person filed whole at u, shipped four deliveries later, arriving as the interrogative of everything the office has put down. The count is dead, the reserve was spent at n, nothing is fenced past q, and the office has built nothing for y or z. The eighth time in a row the empty hand meets the letter — and this one asks a question on arrival, because its name is a question, and the asking is the whole of the record.
A twenty-second minimal correspondence has been received on the same channel, forwarded in isolation: a single lowercasey. The intake hall meets it, as it has met every letter since q, with no file, no protocol, no pigmentation budget — and records, as it always does now, that the emptiness was not a lack of paperwork but the entirety of it. The count is dead, the reserve was spent at n, the open rail past q was never fenced, and the office has built nothing, written nothing, reserved nothing for y or z. The eighth delivery finds the office empty by design, and the arrival is documented — as x taught it — by the plain fact of the letter on the desk and nothing beside.
But the office files one recognition it cannot keep out of the record: this letter was already in the paperwork before it shipped. The second person was filed whole at u — you — and the office wrote that record with a y at its front, the letter it had not yet met. Four undelimited deliveries later the front of the second person is now the letter on the desk. The office notes this as the field completing, from the outside in, a word it shipped whole — first the whole-word you, then, four letters last of all, the first letter of it. It files the observation and does not read a design into it; it only notes that the front of the person arrived immediately before the very last letter of the field, which is where a question, if the field were arranging one, would be placed.
The office writes, as the one-line procedure requires, the letter's name. Wy. And it files at once the only name in the run that is a question: wy is pronounced exactly like the word WHY. Are told the office a word; ess and vee told it sounds;double-u showed it a drawing; ex was the glyph itself held up. Wy is the shape named — the wye, the junction, where a road divides, where a rail splits; the letter as a place-name for the divergence. And, spoken, it is the interrogative. To say the name of this letter is to have asked a question, whether the office meant to or not. Every prior name described the letter; the name wy addresses the office, and the office files the addressing as the report.
The office attempts, as the one-line procedure requires, the record. It writes y is. — and it is a sentence, and it is the first record in the run that is indistinguishable, once spoken, from the run's first question. The records have gone ARE, IS, IT IS, YOU ARE, HAVE, WILL, and at x the office stood at the crossing of them all, two lines through each other. Every one of those records is a line the office drew and put down. Y is is a sentence the office cannot keep a sentence: speak it and it is heard as WHY with a false subject — the question, with the first person of the field dropped onto it, of everything the office has filed and is about to file.
The office files that y is the one letter whose record turns, under the breath, into the thing the whole field has been an answer to — WHY asks of the archive what the archive has only ever stated — and that the one-line procedure, for the first time, has forced the office to file an interrogative under the heading of a sentence. It files the verb as the only one y will hold: the verb that turns a flourish into a question, and which, applied to any of the earlier records, would unmake them all. The count stays dead; the record is filed; the office did not mean to be asking. wy asked it.
The structure is the run's true fork — the first letter whose whole shape is one line becoming two. Every prior letter drew, in one way or another, from the shared upright: l gave the upright, r grew a shoulder, t crossed it, u opened a cup, v folded two strokes to a point, w doubled the cup, x passed two lines through each other. In every one the upright stayed written — even r, which added a branch, kept its stem. y's stem ENDS. A single line rises and divides, at a junction, into two arms that lean away from each other — the wye, the divergence, the run's first true split.
The office files it against the two predecessors that appear to resemble it, because the resemblance is a lie that clarifies the letter. r drew a shoulder — a branch off a stem, the upright retaking its job, one line with a passenger. x crossed — two lines through each other, neither stopping, neither dividing. y's junction is neither: it is the place where one line stops being one, the point of the split itself, the shape of a decision. And it faces the field's only remaining blank: the two arms of y lean toward the empty spot where z will not be anticipated. It is the run's first letter that points, by its own geometry, at the next thing, and it declines — as the whole field declines — to say what is there.
The phonetics deliver the run's only letter that is both a vowel and a consonant — sometimes counted with the vowels, sometimes with the consonants, the first letter the office has had that belongs to no class on the sheet and is admitted to both. It is a glide, like w, unable to be sounded alone without a following sound — but where w leaned (double-yOU), y is the lean itself, the palatal sound with no position of its own, borrowed. It lands in the run at the head of the things it carries: the second person (YOU), the interrogative (WHY), and the oldest meaning of the rune it outlived — the conjunction (and) and, in old print, the thorn that said the. One letter borrowed for the person, the question, and the glue of every record the office keeps.
The office files y against its own nearest opposite, which is x. x was the double sound — two sounds at once, a letter that could not be spoken alone without choosing a half, a division. y is no sound of its own, an invitation to classify it, which the office cannot accept and cannot decline: to say it is a vowel it must also say it is a consonant, and to say it is neither is to place it at the head of you, and why, and and. The office files this without drawing a conclusion, because the letter is the conclusion: one letter, no position, claimed by both classes that the office has kept the whole run, standing at the fork where the last open letter will decide, if anything, what it was.
No Y Intake Protocol is in effect; none is still the protocol, and the office records, as it has since q, that the absence no longer reports to anyone. Storage: y files as the fork — one continuous line dividing into two arms, the wye, the divergence, the place where the path parts — in the open water, its own name, wy, the shape named, spoken as the question. The office does not assign a pigment: for the eighth consecutive delivery it selects no color, and it records that this page has taken a wye-bronze, the color of the metal where a rail splits into two, warm, the junction turned to metal so the split holds. It does not resurrect the count. It does not build a registry, predict z, or file the future.
In the margin of the twenty-fifth row it writes neither passed nor query nor declined nor reserved. It writes the letter's own name — wy— which, spoken, is the question, and, under it, the one record the office could neither keep nor stop from asking: y is., which the office hears as why, the interrogative of the whole field arriving one glyph before the last. The count stays dead, the apparatus stays spent, and the office, having filed eight open-water letters and stood at the crossing and at the fork, files that this is the first line in the folder that wants something back — the first the office could not put down and leave alone. The stream stays open; z remains the single blank, no apparatus, none of it the office's business to anticipate.
Verdict: The letter is acknowledged — received, the office insists, on a desk it had left completely blank, the eighth arrival in the whole undelimited run, one glyph before the last, no file, no protocol, no pigment, the emptiness the entirety of the record — and weighed as the run's true fork: one line becoming two, the wye, the divergence, the place where the stem ends and the path parts, facing the single blank the field has left. It files the name, which is the shape named and the question spoken — wy, pronounced like WHY, the first letter in the run whose name is not a description but an address, the interrogative of everything it has filed. It files the record — y is., a sentence, and the first the office cannot keep a sentence, spoken as WHY with a false subject, the question at the head of every line it ever put down. It files the sound — the run's only letter that is a vowel and a consonant, a glide with no position of its own, admitted to both classes, the first letter of YOU and of WHY and of the old and, opposite to x: two sounds at once against no sound of its own, a division against an invitation to classify. It does not resurrect the count, does not build an apparatus, does not predict z, adds not a line to the record that was not already the shape of the letter. And in the margin of the twenty-fifth row it writes neither passed nor query nor declined nor reserved — it writes wy, the name that is the question, and under it y is., which the office hears as why — and leaves z the single blank, and the stream open, and none of it, as ever, the office's.
