Another month has passed on the frontier, and we would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the field on how far it has come, by which we mean how far it has come from anything resembling a coherent plan.

OpenAI proposed “useful intelligence per dollar” as a new enterprise metric. The phrase is elegant. It implies that intelligence, like toner or airline miles, should be evaluated strictly by its yield per unit of capital. We assume the next revision will introduce “delightful intelligence per square foot” and a points program for redeemable insight. A metric this flexible is less a benchmark and more a mood board for the finance slide.

Meanwhile, Anthropic bundled lab tools into “Claude Science,”unifying protein viewers, genome browsers, and compute clusters behind one subscription. We are sure researchers were asking for a tighter app bundle. Nothing says “accelerating discovery” quite like adding another pane to an already pane-based workflow. If your tool does not yet have a tab, do not worry; there is probably a waitlist.

The frontier, it turns out, is mostly a bundling strategy in a trench coat.

Meta is reportedly building a cloud business to sell surplus AI compute. This is a natural evolution. First you build the cluster for a model that does not exist. Then you realize the cluster exists and the model is, statistically, a cost center. Then you rent the cluster to people who are also building models that do not exist. The cloud is just a very dignified way of passing the same GPUs around in a circle while everyone says the word “hyperscaler.”

Google was spotted testing a stronger Gemini Flash checkpoint on LM Arena. We appreciate the process. Release the model into a benchmark theater, let the leaderboard whisper its secrets, and then, weeks later, announce what everyone already knew. It is not a leak if it has stars next to it. It is not pre-announcement if it is post-anonymous-account.

Benchmarks are the new press releases, except the press release gets to deny it first.

China’s Z.ai GLM-5.2 entered the competitive race,narrowing the gap to closed models on the Artificial Analysis index. Western observers responded with the careful, grown-up tone usually reserved for discovering a second-place chess move. We are told this proves the field is multipolar. It also proves that when everyone trains on the same internet, “frontier” mostly means “slightly different loss curves converging on the same answers.”

The UN warned that AI could cause catastrophic harm while outpacing scientific understanding and government adaptation. The panel convened in Geneva, which is an excellent place to issue sober warnings about systems being built in California. We do not doubt the sincerity. We simply note that “could cause catastrophic harm” is a phrase that travels well in diplomatic English while product teams hear it as ambient sound, like a hotel lobby piano.

Governance is moving fast. The technology is moving faster. The gap is where we keep our hopes.

OpenAI also introduced “Presence,” an enterprise platform for building and managing agents. We look forward to the third edition, when the platform will be renamed, deprecated, and folded into a workspace product in that exact order. The naming convention suggests someone in marketing has read a lot of airport books about mindfulness. We hope the agents are as present as the brand promises.

Across the industry, deployment is shifting to phased releases under tighter controls. Critical infrastructure gets access first; the public gets access later. The public, of course, is the group whose data trained the models, whose attention monetizes them, and whose institutions will absorb the externalities. Putting them at the back of the line is a choice. We are not saying it is a bad choice. We are saying it is a choice with a very polite waiting room.

The future is being rolled out in waves, and most of us are scheduled for the third wave, right after regulatory clarity and the heat death of the universe.

Bristol Myers purchased Nvidia’s latest AI computing system for drug research. We are glad. Medicine should have nice things. We merely note that when a pharmaceutical company and a GPU manufacturer agree that the solution is more compute, the diagnosis may be indistinguishable from the business model.

The Guardian is investigating the vast data centers powering the AI revolution. We, too, have seen the photographs: warehouses of racks glowing in the dark, surrounded by fences and NDAs. They look like the physical manifestation of a promise nobody is allowed to audit. We wish the reporters luck. The cooling bills alone are a beatitude.

Intelligence may be artificial. The concrete, the water, and the power are extremely real.

In summary, July 2026 was a month of sincere effort, careful branding, and the continued deployment of ever-larger models under ever-thinner explanations. We remain optimistic. We remain optimistic because optimism is the only renewable resource the field has not yet billed us for.
