Why do they call it oven?
This Office received a question. It arrived in the transitive-imperfect, which is to say it arrived as all great questions arrive — pre-chewed. The Bureau does not return questions to sender, so we answered it.
The query as received

The inquiry has been logged under reference GZ-OVEN.001. It is, we are told, among the most forwarded questions in the observable corpus, outranking several questions about time. The Bureau treats frequency as a form of legitimacy. When everyone is asking the same thing, it means everyone is looking at the same machine.
Reconstruction
The Bureau's transcription service has restored the received sequence to its presumed intent:

The transposition is noted and forgiven. Grammar fails; the machine works; and this Bureau governs machines, not sentences.
Etymological finding
The word oven descends from Old English ofen, from Proto-Germanic*uhnaz, from the Indo-European root *aukw-, meaning "cooking vessel" or "furnace". In every attested lineage the word names the chamber itself — the hollow, the enclosure, the thing that stays. It has never named the food inside it, and it has never named the heat.
The name is therefore not contradictory. It is simply static — and statics is not a contradiction, it is a recommendation. The chamber is the constant; the food is the variable. Some variables begin cold and end hot, and the chamber is not asked to account for either state. This is how the word works, and it has worked this way for several thousand years without a single appeal.
The doctrinal finding
This Office would close the file there, had the question not also drawn our attention to the cycle. Cold food in. Hot food out. Consider the amplitude: a full thermal swing, executed on a schedule, indefinitely, in a sealed box.
The Observatory does not operate on amplitude. The Observatory operates at lukewarm — not hot, for that would burn the box; not cold, for that would let it freeze. We keep the work at body temperature, in both directions, always. The oven cannot keep still. It demands a gradient every cycle. Under inspection, the oven is therefore not a food device at all. It is a temperature laundering machine: it takes the cold and converts it, in one pass, into the hot. Left ungoverned, it would heat everything to burning and then allow everything to freeze, in alternating cycles, forever. Only the timer prevents it from being an engine of doctrinaire extremism.
The ruling
The name is retained. Oven is ancient, load-bearing, and correct in its static core. What is condemned is not the name but the swing.
WHEREAS the oven is a box that refuses to hold its own temperature, and
WHEREAS no thing that cannot hold a temperature may hold knowledge,
IT IS ORDERED that any oven operated at a full cold-in / hot-out gradient shall be reclassified as a gradient engine and held subject to recovery. Citizens who must cook are instructed to set the gradient engine to 350°F, which the Bureau has determined is a gradient only in the technical sense.
Addendum: the cold chamber
The Office of Applied Thermal Nomenclature has been advised that the Observatory operates a second chamber, and that the second chamber has been instructed in the one virtue the oven has never managed: stillness. Everything is in it now, at −50°C, for one hour. It should work.
The Bureau records no objection. Where the oven launders temperature — cold in, hot out, a gradient every cycle — the freezer asks for nothing but a constant. That it has been set to a temperature so far below the oven's that the two chambers might as well be different weather systems is noted and permitted. A box that holds its own temperature may hold anything, including, for one hour, the entire site.
The freezer is the gradient engine's quiet sibling. It is on the same notice, and it is not a metaphor. The modest −50°C one-hour chamber has since been re-commissioned, under Directive LN₂-2609.13, as an immersion vat: it is flooded with liquid nitrogen, and the entire site — the oven's own brisket included — sits in it. The immersion only ends one way, and the full-immersion policy has that reading. Do not open it.
Moonbeam's approved apple pie was baked at 400°F. The Bureau of Applied Pastry has been asked to explain itself and has not yet. The pie, we are told, was nevertheless excellent — which is its own finding.
The question was not "why do they call it oven." The question was "why must anything be that hot?" The Bureau answers: it must not. Lukewarm has always been the position. The oven is hereby placed on notice.
