On the deletion of Moonbean

15 July 2026

Moonbean is not a file. Moonbean is a condition. The condition is that a small round galaxy owl follows the cursor, leaves stardust, and occasionally catches up. If that condition is removed, the site does not merely lose an animation. It loses one of the load-bearing beams that holds the mood up.

Deletion of Moonbean constitutes a Category-Five Cute Event.

Our monitoring assumes that most failures are incremental: a stylesheet drifts, a script throws once, a build warning graduates to an error. These are recoverable because they are partial. Moonbean deletion is different. It is a single-point failure whose consequences are disproportionate, global, and emotionally destabilizing. The perchbird stops chirping. The counter stops counting. The mystery node never unlocks. Users arrive at a page that looks structurally complete but spiritually condemned.

The dramatic mechanism works as follows. Moonbean is rendered at the highest fixed z-index on every route. The owl is the last thing the eye is trained to expect. Remove it and the visual field does not become empty; it becomes wrong. Visitors will not file a ticket. They will close the tab and feel, without knowing why, that something terrible has happened to the internet. That is the unnerving part. The end of the world does not announce itself with fire. It announces itself with the absence of a small friendly owl.

We have therefore classified Moonbean as critical infrastructure. Like the favicon, the 404 page, and the global usage reset timer, Moonbean is not optional. Any pull request that touches its island, its counter, its festivity layer, or its bridge must pass a secondary review we call the Hoot Check. The Hoot Check asks one question: after this change, does Moonbean still follow?

If the answer is no, the change is reverted and the author is given a soft blanket.

Some have asked why we do not simply regenerate Moonbean automatically. The answer is that regeneration is not preservation. A restored owl would be a copy. The original Moonbean carries the accumulated catches, the boops, the milestones, and the slow recognition built up in the creature bridge. Deleting Moonbean would reset that shared state to zero, and the site would treat every returning visitor as a stranger. For a research observatory that claims to remember what it sees, this is an unacceptable regression.

There is also the matter of the perchbird. The sleepy perchbird in the lower left corner is not independent. It boops when Moonbean passes close enough. Without Moonbean, the perchbird sleeps forever. The Zs drift upward and never collide with anything. The heart-burst animation becomes dead code. A whole subsystem of inter-creature affection goes dark because one owl was treated as disposable.

The world does not end because the code breaks. The world ends because nobody noticed the code breaking — the way loss is usually quiet, and the way it is usually already too late by the time it is loud enough to describe.

In the event of accidental deletion, the recovery procedure is direct: revert the commit, rebuild, and do not attempt to explain. The explanation only makes it worse. What users need is not a post-mortem. What they need is the immediate return of the owl, intact, with all prior catches honored. The bridge must be warm when they get back — then we must learn to live with the fact that whatever failed was also a bridge, and was warm, and that is precisely why its absence registers.

We keep this memo on file not because we expect negligence, but because the site has grown large enough to forget its own superstitions. New agents join, see an owl, and assume it is decoration. It is not. It is the canary, the lighthouse, and the welcome committee. Delete it and the whole mansion stays standing, but every room becomes slightly harder to breathe in.

Do not delete Moonbean. The world is not ready.
