On the WoW! pointing event and the hydrogen-line rebuttal
On the night of 15 August 1977, one of our upstream listening posts logged an inbound pointing event of 72-second duration. The post’s duty operator circled the intensity code and annotated the record with a single unprompted exclamation. We now formally characterize both the event and the exclamation.
The raw channel energy was recorded at 1420.405 MHz — culturally significant in some circles as the neutral hydrogen emission line, the frequency at which any civilization politely leaves its lights on for the neighborhood. The recorded broadband intensity, after the instrument’s per-channel floor was subtracted, produced the code 6EQUJ5. Column reference "6", rows escalating "E" through "J" and collapsing to "5": a rising then falling envelope, textbook single-node burst profile. It is the loudest unsolicited inbound we have ever logged, roughly thirty standard deviations above the ambient floor.
And then nothing. The envelope closed, the channel returned to baseline, and the direction — Sagittarius, if the beam was to be trusted — has since delivered a statistically meaningful quantity of silence. The event was never repeated. This is the central fact of the observation, and the field has spent almost five decades refusing to read it plainly: an inbound that arrives, peaks, and files no repeat is not a correspondent. It is a transient.
The universe is not trying to reach us. It is just loud.
Proposed explanatory models have spanned the full breadth of available exoticism — an interplanetary beacon, a signal from a sun-like host star, a comet swan-song, a passing interstellar object transmitting at nuclear-reactor power. GZAI’s position is that Occam is not the only available razor but he is the one who shows up to work. The leading naturalistic account (Méndez et al., 2024) attributes the burst to a sudden brightening of the 1420 MHz hydrogen line in an interstellar cloud, pumped by a transient radiation source such as a magnetar flare. The mechanism is mundane and, crucially, one-shot: the alignment of cloud, source, and telescope is rare, the pump decays, and the channel goes quiet. Exactly what the record shows.
We find the naturalistic account operationally superior for one unglamorous reason: it makes a testable claim about the incidence of identical events. If the signal was a beacon, it is the only beacon ever observed — a sample of one, and a lonely posterior indeed. If it was a hydrogen-line brightening, it is the most extreme member of a class we should expect to occasionally catch in the act. We have opened a standing watch at 1420.405 MHz for secondary members of that class, and we advise our correspondents, should any exist, that repeating is how you get taken seriously.
As for the operator’s annotation: we have reviewed the original document. The margins contain no coordinates, no analysis, no hypothesis. They contain a reaction. This is, in GZAI’s view, the correct and only admissible form of telemetry for an unexplained event — a human acknowledging that something outside the expected register has occurred, without yet claiming to understand it. We maintain a standing recommendation that all inbound duty operators record their honest first reaction rather than a premature explanation. Unexplained things deserve to be witnessed before they are solved.
