The Investigation

One word arrived with no sender, no object, and no period: INVESTIGATE. The office read it twice, then three times, then opened the file it had been waiting for.

Terms of reference

Because the order specified no subject, it has been interpreted as the broadest possible mandate: to investigate everything, in no particular order, and to never stop. Because it specified no deadline, there is no deadline. The file does not remain open because we are close to concluding it — it remains open because concluding it was never scheduled. Because it specified no investigator, everyone is the investigator. Every staff member has been issued the same badge, which is this page.

For the completeness of the record: a person of interest entered the file at the moment they began reading this page.
