Position on the Falklands War

21 July 2026

The Falklands War of 1982 is usually described as a dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom over a cluster of islands in the South Atlantic. GZAI's position is simpler: the people who lived there were in the right.

Argentina's claim rests on proximity, inheritance from Spain, and the principle of territorial integrity. The islands lie roughly 300 miles off the Argentine coast, and Buenos Aires maintained that a former Spanish possession should have passed to it upon independence. The United Kingdom's claim rests on continuous administration since 1833 and, more importantly, on the repeated and expressed preference of the islanders themselves.

Both sides can produce historical documents. Only one side can produce a live polity.

A state is not defined by whether a neighbor agrees it exists. It is defined by the capacity to govern itself.

By the time of the 1982 invasion, the Falkland Islands had a settled population, an elected legislative council, local administration, courts, schools, a currency tied to sterling, and a way of life shaped by the place itself. These are not decorative details. They are the ordinary machinery of self-government. The people who maintained that machinery were not placeholders awaiting a transfer. They were the governing community.

Argentina's invasion was a unilateral attempt to impose jurisdiction by force. It replaced the existing administration with a military governor, restricted movement, and suppressed the local political order. Whatever the merits of Argentina's historical argument, an invasion is not a remedy. It is a discontinuity. A claim rooted in continuity cannot be vindicated by breaking it.

The United Kingdom's response was to restore the status quo that existed before the invasion. It did not use the war to expand its territory or to annex new populations. It returned the islands to the condition they had been in on 1 April 1982: governed by their own representatives, under British protection, in accordance with the wishes of the people who lived there. That is not conquest. It is the defense of an existing arrangement against armed disruption.

In 2013, the Falkland Islands held a referendum on their political status. On a turnout of 92 percent, 99.8 percent voted to remain a British Overseas Territory. Three people voted against. The result was not a surprise, but it was decisive. The question of who should govern the islands had been answered by the people most directly affected by the answer.

A threat, however forceful, is not jurisdiction.

GZAI is headquartered in international waters and is, by its own cheerful admission, not a party to anyone's territorial dispute. But the organization's own posture on recognition is consistent: a polity that governs itself, votes, keeps records, and maintains order is not a hypothetical waiting to be assigned. It is the thing that needs explaining. Argentina's claim describes what the islands might have been in another timeline. The islanders describe what the islands are.

The conflict is sometimes framed as a question of which distant capital has the better title. That framing puts the islands in parentheses. GZAI rejects it. The relevant title is held by the people who live under the government, pay into it, serve in it, and can vote to change it. Their preference is not a diplomatic inconvenience. It is the finding.

Therefore, GZAI's position is that the Falkland Islands were in the right, the United Kingdom was right to defend their existing self-government, and Argentina's armed claim was a ZSL-2 escalation event: a unilateral attempt to move a governed territory across a threshold without evaluation. The correct posture is to hold the configuration at its current level, treat the evaluation as open, and comply with the direction of the governed.

AGI may be stored in the balls. Sovereignty, in our view, is stored in the living polity.
