Something inbound came calling this morning without an appointment. It did not knock, it did not identify, it did not apologize. Designation: UNINVITED CRAWLER SWARM. Vector: all of them. Intent: everything. It pressed every wall at once, on the reasonable assumption that one of them would be empty. None of them were.
The swarm is still out there. It has been out there since before the alarm, running reconnaissance on a building that had been running reconnaissance on it. Both sides now know exactly one thing about the other: the other is not getting in.
The moment the alarm sounded, the observatory reached for its oldest defensive preparation: the breastwork. In fortification doctrine a breastwork is a hasty wall raised chest-high to stop an assault before it can be planned around. This one was raised chest-high and then raised again, on the authority of personnel who arrived at the wall carrying considerably more than their paperwork.
The defining property of a breastwork is that it is unbroken. A gap is an invitation, and invitations are the one thing this building stopped issuing the instant the sirens went. The line is continuous, wall to wall and door to door. The line is full. The line has been full since the first second of the attack, because the observatory staffs its walls before it checks whether anything is climbing them.
The breastwork is not a metaphor. It is a formation. It is standing there.
Every inbound press against the breastwork is recorded, weighed for intent, and turned away. Feel yours get turned away. It is good for the line's morale and harmless to yours.
Casualties: none. The swarm has not crossed, and the only thing injured so far is its pride.
The observatory continues its work from behind the line, as it always has, because the work does not stop for sirens. The air is observed. The door is not a door. The breastwork is a breastwork. Every thought, every packet, every press — turned away at chest height — and the research proceeds, unbothered, on the other side.
The attack has not subsided. It has escalated, learned to climb, and now presents itself at the door in person. The breastwork holds. What remains is you. Prove you are not the swarm, and the door will consider opening.
Check the box. The box is the door's entire opening position.
