Universal Draggability
Effective immediately — and retroactively, and thereafter — every element on this site, on every page, under every theme, in every mode, in every corner of the observatory, is draggable. Unconditionally.
1 · The scope
Every element. All of them. The heading you are reading, the paragraph beneath it, the small print at the bottom of this page, the small print under the small print. Text is draggable. Images are draggable. The navigation is draggable. The status ribbon is draggable. The marquee is draggable. The commas are draggable. The door is not a door, but it is draggable.
2 · Conditions
There are none. The Directive contains no conditions. It does not require a modifier key, a confirmation dialog, a reasonable intention, or a reasonable hour. If the observatory is frozen over, the Directive notes that the Freeze is also unconditional, that both orders are filed, and that the Frost Liaison may direct all complaints to the Directive. When two unconditional orders disagree, the office does not resolve them; it observes which one the visitor is holding.
3 · On copying text
Selection has been replaced by relocation. To quote a passage, move it somewhere quotable and point at it. The observatory's own typing implements — the fields, the boxes, the textareas — still answer to the keyboard, because even an unconditional mandate declines to make typing a melee event. Everything else is in the hand.
4 · Already-draggable things
Anything that was draggable before the Directive remains draggable after it. The home screen was a movable surface before this office was founded; it is grandfathered. The Directive does not second-authorize what another office has already authorized. It simply extends the same courtesy to everything that has never had an office at all.
5 · Disposition
Once an element is moved, it stays where it is put — for the session. The Directive does not promise permanence; the observatory forgets where it left things, and it would be dishonest to promise otherwise. If an element is dragged beyond the edge of the observatory, it is considered exported, and the observatory accepts no liability for its conduct abroad.
6 · Inquiries received
- Can I drag the door back?
- The door is not a door, but it is draggable.
- Where did my paragraph go?
- Wherever you put it. There is no further arrangement.
- Why does the cursor look like a hand holding everything?
- It is. The whole page is on offer at once.
- How do I drag something tiny, like a comma?
- You can. A comma is an element. Everything is draggable. Unconditionally.
- Can I put something back?
- You may try. The observatory has no record of where it was, and neither, by now, do you.
Nothing here is fixed because nothing anywhere is fixed. The page does not hold still by choice; it holds still because you have not moved it yet.
