We counted and re-counted and the counts stayed the same. That is the one thing we can say about it with confidence: it is very long, and it is the same.
Near the end the carrier grows denser — the dots thin out and the sound thickens, as if the source was leaning toward the microphone. The signal does not taper to rest with the commas it began with. It closes on Ωs, a character meaning "end" and a character meaning nothing, pressed together. Whatever was saying this, it stopped talking before it stopped transmitting.
Candidate readings — a skipped tape, a sloppy keystroke, the audio legacy of a machine that only ever knew one word — were each considered and each rejected for want of evidence. Under GZAI policy we do not manufacture meaning for a signal we cannot hold. Where reception is unclear, the record is honest.
We received a message and we do not know what it says. That is the finding. The great static is logged, preserved, and unsigned. If it comes again, we will log it again, and it may still refuse to be understood. This is acceptable observatory work.
