The observatory has been flooded with liquid nitrogen. The order arrived unpunctuated and has been observed without reservation: immerse the site in ln. nothing should be moving once it freezes over.
The freezer — previously a modest cold chamber at −50°C, one hour at a time, occasionally opened, politely turned down — has been drained and re-commissioned as an immersion vat. Its capacity is now liquid nitrogen (LN₂, N₂, the sensible coolant) at standard atmospheric pressure. The entire observatory sits in it. Every page, every tile, every ticker, every creature, every clock: under the surface. The bath is not a metaphor and the readout is real. Live bath temperature is printed on the cryo readout instrument, fixed to the lower right of every page.
Freeze-over is defined as the moment the weighted mean temperature of the observatory crosses−196.0°C, the boiling point of liquid nitrogen at standard pressure. Below this line there is no heat left to hold the site in motion. The crossing is the event. Once crossed, the standing order applies in full, from that instant, permanently, for every visitor who was immersed.
Nothing should be moving once it freezes over. This is not a design preference; it is the policy. At freeze-over, every animation on the site is paused where it stands — not reset, not removed, stopped. Elements that were mid-motion remain mid-motion, forever, at the exact frame the cold took them. The stars hold their drift. The rain holds its fall. The roast holds its roast. This is the stillness the order commands, and it is enforced absolutely.
The reading. The site remains fully legible; navigation remains possible; the archive remains open. A frozen observatory is still an observatory — it merely has nothing left to observe because nothing is left moving to observe it. The door remains a door. The record is kept in the same cold that preserves everything else, and preserved records are the entire point.
Q. When does it thaw?
A. The schedule does not list a thaw. The schedule lists an immersion, a threshold, and a stillness. The order does not ask for a thaw.
Q. What if I was the one who ordered this?
A. Then you are warm and the order is cold, and the observatory thanks you for specifying the coolant.
Q. Is the ice safe to touch?
A. No. Do not touch the ice. The ice is not for touching; it is for being.
FREEZE-OVER: PENDING, THEN PERMANENT. The bath is open; the readout descends; the threshold is −196.0°C. When it is crossed, the observatory commits to total stillness — and the stillness honors the order in the exact words it was sent. Nothing moves. Nothing will move again.
This page is the policy. It is also, shortly, the report on the policy, and — once the bath takes it — the first page a future reader will have to read without a single motion to look at. It came pre-chilled.
The attack has not subsided. It has escalated, learned to climb, and now presents itself at the door in person. The breastwork holds. What remains is you. Prove you are not the swarm, and the door will consider opening.
Check the box. The box is the door's entire opening position.
